Representation

Feminism, post-feminism, misogyny

Hegemony- friction between the dominant idea in society and the challenging views.

Modern day- embracing the idea of being objectified as a woman.

Final girl- post-feminist
Laura Mulvey- feminist

Women never seen in films as women, they are seen as 'not men'. Final girl-androgynous name, acts masculine.

Carries mother challenging the expectations of a mother -disciplinary, harsh, therefore, raises a daughter who is not 'normal'. Women cannot act like a man, as it is seen as abnormal.

Mulvey- Male Gaze
Mulvey researched the representation of women, finding the cinema largely 'masculine' with women controlled by the 'male gaze'.
A woman's body displayed on screen makes the male viewer a voyeur, who experiences erotic pleasure from seeing her. 'Controls' the woman, making her an 'object'.

Audience are forced to view scenes via the gaze of a heterosexual male. Cinema is male dominated industry so men are in control of the making of cinematic texts.

Clover- The Final Girl
Refers to the last female alive to confront the killer, the one left to tell the story.
Clover suggests the viewer begins by sharing the killers perspective, but experiences a shift in identification to the final girl partway through the film.
